Wyoming Department of Health Physician Director Honored with 2009 Community Service Award

Brent D. Sherard, MD was born in Wheatland, Wyoming, and graduated from Wheatland High School.

He graduated from the University of Wyoming with a B.S. degree in zoology in 1973.

Dr. Sherard received his M.D. degree from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1979, and his M.P.H. degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia in 2003.

He completed an internal medicine residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Denver, Colorado in 1982. Following his residency, he practiced medicine in Wheatland for 19 years. During this time, he also served as the Platte County health officer.

Dr. Sherard joined the Wyoming Department of Health in April 2001 as state health officer. Governor Jim Geringer appointed Dr. Sherard to serve as interim director in addition to his state health officer duties from September 2002 through March 2003. Governor Dave Freudenthal later appointed him as interim director in March 2005, and as director in June 2005. Dr. Sherard continues to serve as both Wyoming Department of Health director and as state health officer.

Said best by his staff, “in Brent’s capacity and leadership as Director and State Health Officer, he has brought a sense of honesty, integrity, and confidence in the services and programs of the Wyoming Department of Health, and a strong sense of service to the people of Wyoming.”

Dr. Sherard, “your commitment to the citizens of Wyoming through your work in establishing the ‘Commit to Your Health Campaign’ is recognized as one of the greater accomplishments at the Department. You have clearly always gone the extra mile to provide quality services to the citizens of Wyoming with so many initiatives including facilitating vaccinations for all of Wyoming’s children and a new State laboratory. It goes without saying that you are most deserving of the 2009 WMS Community Service Award. Let this be our small way of saying thank you for all the big ways you have touched, and continue to touch, Wyoming.”
