Wyoming Doctors Name Statewide Physician of the Year
Casper Psychiatrist to be honored with 2019 WMS Physician of the Year Award

CHEYENNE – Stephen Brown, MD, of Casper was recently named, and will be honored by the Wyoming Medical Society (WMS) as the recipient of the 2019 State Physician of the Year. This award is presented each year to Wyoming’s top physician in recognition of their contributions to Wyoming communities, honoring the physician for time and personal sacrifice for the benefit of Wyoming and its communities.

Dr. Brown is a pillar of Wyoming’s medical community dedicating his career to caring for adolescent and child psychiatric patients as a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) while simultaneously working to promote engagement in advocacy and organized medicine at the county, state and national levels among Wyoming’s physicians. He is one of the few physicians in WMS’s long history to be asked to serve two years as WMS President, a testament to the high regard in which his colleagues hold him. Dr. Brown has a rich history of leadership within WMS serving as past president, a longstanding member of the executive committee, former alternate delegate, and current delegate, to the American Medical Association (AMA). The APA and the state chapter thereof benefit from Dr. Brown’s dedication to influencing the future of medicine as he continues his service as current Area West Assembly Representative to the APA and state chapter executive committee member.

Dr. Brown is Wyoming Behavioral Institute’s medical director where he maintains a busy and thriving clinical practice while simultaneously pursuing his passion for educating the next generation of doctors. He plays a critical role in maintaining one of the most competitive WWAMI medical school clerkship rotations for medical students across the region. Dr. Brown’s zest for giving back to Wyoming’s communities goes beyond clinical medicine allowing him to find time to volunteer with Rotary, serve as Past President of the Child Developmental Center of Natrona County, and Past President of the region’s Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) Mountain-Pacific Quality Health (MPQH).

“Stephen Brown, MD, is an absolutely delightful individual with the highest of ethical standards. He is a terrific friend, and totally devoted to his family and patients. I can’t think of a finer and more deserving individual to be honored with the distinguished WMS State Physician of the Year Award,” said Sigsbee Duck, MD, in nominating Dr. Brown for the organization’s prestigious award.

Dr. Brown has practiced medicine in Wyoming since 1990.  He received his undergraduate degree from Colorado College in physics, and completed an MBA/BS in electrical engineering at Washington University at St. Louis before attending and graduating from University of Southern California Medical School.  Dr. Brown completed his residency training and fellowship in child psychiatry at Washington University Barnes-Jewish and St. Louis Children’s Hospital where he received the first annual Award for Clinical Excellence.  He and his wife of 37 years, Helen, have three grown children, Julie, Danielle, and Matt.
