Wyoming Doctors Name Statewide Physician of the Year
Star Valley Family Medicine Physician to be honored with 2024 WMS Physician of the Year Award
CHEYENNE – Wyoming Medical Society (WMS) today announced the selection of Martha Hageman, MD, of Afton as the 2024 Physician of the Year.
WMS began the Physician of the Year Award, formerly the Community Service Award, in 1961 awarding Dr. Donald G. Macleod of Jackson with the first honor. This award is presented each year to a Wyoming physician in recognition of their history of and ongoing contributions to Wyoming communities, honoring the physician for their time and personal sacrifice for the benefit of Wyoming and its communities. Dr. Hageman is only the second female physician as well as the second physician from Star Valley to receive this honor.
“Dr. Hageman is a pillar of Wyoming’s medical community, dedicating her career to caring for patients as a Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). She has served in many leadership roles through the years, including Chief of Staff of her local hospital, hospital board member during her time in private practice, and for almost the last four years as Chairperson of the Credentialing Committee and that is why she stood out to our selection committee,” said WMS Executive Director Sheila Bush.
Dr. Hageman is a third-generation physician, following in her grandfather’s footsteps opting for a career in Primary Care Medicine. She arrived in Star Valley in the fall of 1995 and has been a pioneer in the area, including being the first female physician in the valley.
“Over the course of her more than 30-year career Dr. Hageman has earned the trust and confidence of her patients. She is respected across the valley as a compassionate and empathetic listener and a top-tier physician delivering the highest level of medical care possible,” said WMS President Spencer Weston, MD.
Dr. Hageman graduated from the Wyoming Medical Society’s Physician Leadership Academy in 2022, a testament to her continued dedication to excellence, personal enrichment, and growth. She also finds time to foster her passion for the arts through support of local arts organizations, particularly those focused on supporting children. She currently serves as a board member of the Lincoln Uinta Child Development Association.
Dr. Hageman received her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan before attending medical school at the University of Cincinnati. She completed her family medicine residency training from Duluth Graduate Medical Education Program in 1995 where she earned the Mead Johnson Award in Graduate Medical Education. She and her husband of 32 years, Donald Kirk, MD, are blessed with two adult children both of whom are on the path to pursue careers in medicine.
The Wyoming Medical Society was founded in 1903 to provide representation, advocacy, and service to Wyoming physicians. For more information about the physician of the year award or the Wyoming Medical Society contact Executive Director Sheila Bush at sheila@wyomed.org or 307-630-8602.
