The Wyoming Legislature created a Health Insurance Affordability Task Force to examine one of the most pressing challenges facing patients, employers, physicians, and communities across the state: the rising cost of health insurance. The task force was formed during the 2026 interim to study why health insurance premiums remain difficult to afford for many Wyoming residents, particularly small business owners, self-employed individuals, families, agricultural producers, early retirees, and others who may not have access to employer-sponsored coverage or federal subsidies whose future sustainability continues to be threatened.
The task force includes members of the Wyoming House and Senate, along with representatives from state agencies and key healthcare organizations, including the Department of Insurance, Department of Health, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wyoming, and the Wyoming Hospital Association. While the Wyoming Medical Society was not formally named as a sitting member of the task force, WMS was engaged early in the process and given ample time on the task force’s June agenda to share the perspectives and positions of its members.
At the most recent meeting, Executive Director Sheila Bush continued her work in ensuring WMS’s seat at this important policy conversation table and presented on the complex factors driving healthcare costs in Wyoming. Her testimony emphasized the realities of practicing medicine in a rural and frontier state, including workforce shortages, uncompensated care, access challenges, emergency care obligations, the critical role of primary care, and the impact of healthcare consolidation. The Task Force spent two days exploring potential solutions and will reconvene on August 14 to continue its work, including discussions on provider consolidation, reinsurance, healthcare workforce expansion, and other proposals that could directly affect Wyoming physicians and their patients.
